As a lad, I remember it being referred to as isinglass, and it was used to preserve eggs (personal experience type wiki job)

hey Martin, i'm not (I wasnt!) saying your wrong !
As lad who went on to do math phys and chem [including chemical gardens and big(-ish) bangs of the nitrotoluene variety, shhhh] just that waterglass (sodium silicate) registers with me as one of the egg preserving tools of yeaster year.
As I keep saying, I dont know if isinglass was also used !
It may well have been, but it didnt cross my horizon!
I am supposing, (without casting nastertiums !) that there may have been some transliteration errors (once upon a time called chinese whispers, no doubt frowned upon in these PC days) over the years,
it really isnt any bover to me, I know how to preserve egg production for my own needs !

I don't know whether it is Isinglass either - all i know is that that's what my dad was told. He thought it a bit strange because he'd only ever known it be used for finings too..
