Correction - only one germinated. And that's after - 6 weeks or so? On a heated propagator? (I've taken the lid off, because it was getting too steamy...)
what did i do wrong?

No parsnips in East sussex either ....yet .I like the idea of marking them with radishes, must try that.

I did the radish/parsnip trick last year. The radishes were horrible (think I need to enrich that soil) and the parsnips showed their little heads above ground, then died!
I'm told it can be up to 8 weeks for the shy little things to germinate... the ones I planted in late August germinated really fast but never matured and I've just now tugged out the pathetic little roots and chucked them on the compost heap.

It's very slow up here for everything and mine have just decided to make some sort of show after 6 weeks despite being in large tubs of good soil in a sheltered sunny position.
I'm not sure it's patience that is required so much as sheer cussedness in running an allotment.

I believe that some plants are driven by light and some by heat - anyone know which group parsnips fall into?

I've found the best way for parsnips is to use small bio-degradable pots with a layer of cling film over the top to keep them moist. This is then put on the windowsill in full sun. This year I managed to get seedlings in about 10 days, which is the best ever.
Possibly just luck but I've had good success this way. I always get new seed too as this plant does seem to be somewhat finnecky!

I started half o mine of in loo rolls. Most germinatedand were transfered to the plot.
A bit strange last night, went over to the plot and had a look at them. Something had gone roundall the ones in the loo rolls and ripped the top few mm of the cardboard (the bits that were just above ground) off and chewed it up. The plants were fine, just the card board was attacked!
hope it's not an omen that toilet roll taste better than my parsnips
