Books for toddlers

I was going to suggest Peepo too, it's a very sweet book and (because it's set in the 1940s...) has lots of recognisable bits and pieces in it.

Guess How Much I Love You is fabulous because a) it's about hares b) it's set outside and c) it's a love story between a father and his child.

I think all the Eric Carle books are wonderful. As well as The Hungry Caterpillar there's one about a seed that falls to earth and grows which is obviously all about the life cycle of plants - get 'em started young!

Just thought I'd add a book here, although not for toddlers to read alone, my boys 8&6 and husband 32 all enjoyed listening to Eco-Wolf and the Three Pigs by Laurence Anholt and Arthur Robins. I'd only picked it up to see what type of kids book has a wolf wearing a CND t-shirt on the front, but hey Eco-Wolk huffed and puffed man and blew the power station down to get his green valley back from the greedy (and obviously capitalist) pigs.

No idea if you can still get it as was publish 9 yrs ago.

Jan Fearnley - both of mine loved "Little Robin Red Vest" and "Mr Wolf's Pancakes". Lovely pictures and funny too.

Mick Inkpen - "Everybody hide from Wibbley Pig" with its fun lift the flap pages and he also wrote the Kipper the Dog stories.

Peepo brings back memories too...I know it off by heart. Here's a little baby 1,2,3 etc...etc..

Quentin Blake's books have a wonderfully readable prose style, and the illustrations are from 'yesteryear'.

Mrs Pepperpot also had a more sustainable lifestyle.

These books aren't quite 'toddler' books officially, but toddlers don't generally object to being read to.

Thumbs up here for The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Would anybody like me to read it to you? I'd be delighted... (That one's ideal for toddlers)

I don't think a sustainability theme really matters much though, as long as the books aren't totally crass. Try to keep them clear of TV...

Gardener George Goes to Town, fab book. one of my faves from my later childhood but DD loves it too.
still available but only second hand. I think it's out of print, but it's well worth it if you can get a copy.

he comes from a fertile valley where he made everything grow, tres to get work in a town, hates the concrete-yness of the town, grows plants in a bit of wasteland... it's all good. really happy ending.

I love Floras Flowers by Debi Gliori, (actually I love all of her books!) but this is a nice one about the little rabbit family gardening and growing all their own stuff.
