BTW - how do you folks cook pulses in the slow cooker? When I tried this a while back the split peas were still hard after a full days cooking on high, so the last couple of times I've done it I've brought them to the boil in a pan and then chucked them in. A bit of a faff but still better than using the oven - even though they always cook perfectly in there!

The smoked hough is cooking nicely with some split peas in the slow cooker.

Tonight. South indian garlic chilli chicken with pilau rice a cucumber raita and lime pickle washed down with a nice glass or two of red wine.
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Gordon Bennett woman, haven't you moved onto sugar puffs by now?
I have finally mastered blind baking and made a very nice quiche. Yet I also made mini quiches and they don't have soggy bottoms without being blind baked.
However shan't be making quiche very often that's for sure, as it costs about 3 times as much as buying a frozen one, and that's using milk not double cream (you MUST be joking!).
Just butter and cheese not to mention feta and brocolli, that's at least 6 euros gone.....
...... and 5 hours out of my life!

Re: What are we all having for dinner?
It's sad huh? The thing is, I still can't explain why, but I know that if I eat a 'proper' meal then about an hour later I'm craving them, and then I'm on edge until it's time for a bowl! At least my shopping list is easy most weeks!Millymollymandy wrote:Gordon Bennett woman, haven't you moved onto sugar puffs by now?![]()

It's the Scottish spelling of hockMillymollymandy wrote:What is a hough?
They also use smoked ribs to make broth - being a newbie to the beast I bought a sheet thinking they'd be really tasty done Chinese style - they're soooooooo salty the only thing you can do is boil them. Didn't make that mistake twice

Re: What are we all having for dinner?
Yes I think the english term for a hough is "hock". Best way in the world to make soup! What do english people boil to flavour a broth?
Tonight is spag bol with little rolls full of garlic butter washed down with a bottle of sparkling water! Might even get some clootie dumpling and ice-cream for pud!

Re: What are we all having for dinner?
Now my Granny used to buy hough and kidney - hough or perhaps hoff was shin beef whereas a hock is a ham hock/hough
I did wonder how well lentils would go with beef
Oh - and we are having shepherds pie!

Re: What are we all having for dinner?
Is it pronounced hock or hoff in Scotland then? I was calling it hoff this morning whilst reading it, although of course it might have been pronounced like Slough for all I know.

Re: What are we all having for dinner?
Hock, well it is by me anyway - it's either right or they think I know no better because I'm English (probably not too wide of the mark
)

I have always pronounced it as "haw" but that may well be a central belt thing
Green Aura, don't worry as long as you don't say the dreaded "lock" instead of loch you should be fine!
On the topic of dinner the weather here is so horrid we have popped tonights spag bol in the freezer and my OH is making a big pan of chips, something we rarely have!
