You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

The first salads and potatoes in the early were always to be relished, especially after the last three months of half rotted spuds from the farm. Cremola Foam was awesome as was sodastream juice. My dad made great fruit loaf from all bran and my mums raspberry jam and coconut tarts were amazing.

This reminds me of a younger cousin of mine. His favourite dinner when he was about 4 was 'Beenz, Heinz and legs' or to put it another way, Heinz beans and eggs. He loved it but the mixture of baked beans and eggs has always turned me right off :pukeright: . Can't even have them on the same plate, although seperately they're OK.

Funny this thread shoud resurface as yesterday I was telling my kids about school dinners in the 70s. They were moaning about French cantine dinners...

Things I remember are - giant sliced carrots about 2 inches in diameter cooked until they disintegrated when you stuck a fork into them, beige peas, giant powdery butter beans and grilled liver you could use to resole boots. :pukeright:

School dinners, now there's a nighmare! One secondary school I attended had chips with everything. No alternatives, no mash, no boiled just chips. Oh that horrible chocolate custard and chocolate cake - :pukeright: .

Good memories of Sunday tea by the fire in the winter - we used to do toast on the fire, and it was the only meal we were allowed to have on a tray instead of up at the table.
Bad memories of horrible school food - especially being made to sit all afternoon over a plate of bright pink blancmange until I ate it. I finally did, and was promptly sick!! :pukeright:

A lasting memory of mine is being given malted barley extract in warm milk in the early '60s. Also Banana and custard in Blue and white striped Cornish ware china bowls after sunday lunch, usually when the Black and White dubbed French version of Robinson Crusoe was on the telly.....Happy days!

Mine was cabbage (or sprouts) - had a pathological dread of dinner ladies ever since! :shaking:

Yes, yes, yes!!!

Everyone in my family thinks I'm bloody mad because I have to keep my eggs virginal! If they are on the same plate as something else with a sauce, then I pop a magazine or something to tip the plate & help keep the eggs clean & out of harms way - and there's always a barrier of maybe sausage & bacon between them!
