nice one..never thought of corrupting the mind of a budgie..
i would really love to know who thinks up these so-called articles and how they do it...and how they have the nerve to print it for a start..i haven't bought a paper for at least 10 yrs..but my mother thrust this article in my face with a zealous sheen to her face, almost saying "i told you ,your wasting your time"..only she didn't think that when i wandered down my garden in the summer and gave her a box full of salad, some eggs and flowers..hypocrite springs to mind...also when i gave her some parsnips and a cabbage last wk...hmmm..if i'm wasting my time and energy then i'm not going to give her veggies then..blackmail you say..no thats an ugly word..i prefer friendly persuasion...she will come to the darkside of self sufficiency if i have to drag her kicking and screaming...

So do I, especially as Wallmart who are anti-trade union and according to Wiki are facing a gender discrimination lawsuit. In 2009 the company made 13.6 billion so why are they so worried about self sufficiencySophie_Chillie wrote:I agree!Flo wrote:Hmm - if the good life is rubbish, so is shopping in A5da which sure ain't my favourite place to shop.

You are right - apparently there are over 300,000 allotment holders in the UK now and there a growing waiting lists everywhere. The supermarkets are worried that as more and more grow their own and realise that it tastes so much better the less huge profits they will make

Next, folk need to figure out that the land to grow their food on was stolen from us. Land tenure effectively hasn't changed since the Norman conquest when it was divided up amoungst a small number of knights and royals. Every family in Britain could have around 3 acres of agricultural land if it was shared out equally - more than enough to be self-sufficient.okra wrote:[

Agreed Graham, but in truth the theft was still taking place long after,I'm not the only person who traces the present enviromental melt down back to the enclosures when so much common land was expropriatedfrom 'common people' and they were as a result forced to labour for the expropriators.

Strangely the bloke who built this place in the late 1700s was one of the few to kick back.Up here on the common there are several holdings which were squats on the little bit of remaining common land(too high for decent arable). The houses are all built on a kind of stone plinth as the rule was locally established that you could grab as much Land as you could see from the roof(details are a bit sketchy but this isn't yet another rural myth). As a result the holdings are built in a bit of a dip,to shelter from the wind but as high as feasible.
Anyhow ,the upshot of it all is as a result of some tenuous ,romantic, idealistic connections,I paid well over the top for a crap smallholding!

Oldjerry, isn't that interesting about the man who built your place. What was his name? I'm wondering if I could go and dig out a tract or something in the university library. I used to be very into the diggers* who were earlier and I think I thought the whole digger-type spirit ended at the restoration, what do I know. (Obviously don't tell me if it would mean all the internet could identify your exact address and come and stalk you/ steal your identity).

Why would an interest in the diggers be sad?Their spirit,I believe,is at the heart of what little good there is around. It's easy to sit complacently surrounded by afew acres and congratulate yourself at kicking the system, but I take my hat off to people who grow stuff in small areas, window boxes, backyards etc.truly 21st.century diggers.
