Pigeon Pilferers

Post: # 112852Post andyt »

Our veg patch is under constant attack from Woodpigeons(bless 'em).
We've got strips of tinfoil strung up, along with most of our C.D. collection! We've even got a Ned Kelly look-alike scarecrow with a bright red T-shirt (don't ask),however,as soon as our backs are turned, the little darlings form a queue to relieve us of our swede & sprouting broccoli plants. Apart from Pastry Overcoats,is there any other deterrents that some bright spark can think of? ..........please,please(trying not to grovel too much)
its either one or the other,or neither of the two.

I'm assuming your crops aren't netted...? Netting certainly keeps our wood pigeons off our plants.

It's also been suggested to me in the past that you put a bird table up and feed them with an alternative supply of food - haven't had the need to try this though so can't vouch for it's success rate.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!

If I did not net my brassicas, lettuce etc there would be no point planting them. It is a bit of a pain but I just push a few canes or golf shafts around the beds, string some bailer twine round them then peg the net down with tent pegs.

yup, netting is about the best way. The various pests (birds, rats, mice, moles etc etc) at our lotty are so bad that we've virtually had to turn our plot into a fort knox of netting.
