Hello all,
back from my holiday in Pamploma.
This should amuse some of you, check the video
a mexican wave with a BIG difference :)
(Only humans were injured)
Bull-ring collapses in Colombia
The seating collapse was caught live on TV
Dozens of people have been injured after part of an improvised bullfighting ring in Planadas, southern Colombia, collapsed.
Spectators plunged to the ground, triggering panic and a scramble for safety as the bull approached the area.
Some 500 people were attending the event, part of an annual fiesta, when the accident happened.
The collapse of the stand was caught live on television. An investigation into what caused it is under way.
Two people dressed as clowns tried to distract the bull away from the fleeing crowds.
One injured spectator, Edna Patricia Guzman, said the venue was packed.
"The bullfighting ring was full and the organisers kept letting more people come, so it was a very strong fall," she said.
Another spectator said: "Everybody was jumping and the stands were too weak, I mean they were moving a lot, no-one paid any attention to the stands."
Rescue workers and local residents helped people at the scene. More than 80 people were reported to have been taken to the local hospital.
Diego Escobar, the health secretary for the province, said 18 people were injured, two of them children who suffered fractures.
"There are people who got injured because of the debris, some of them need stitches in the head and legs," he said.
"We are waiting for the last report that the hospital of Planadas gives us to be able to tell Colombians the reason why the bullfighting ring collapsed," he added.

I know I shouldn't laugh, but!
Did you have a nice holiday - Pamplona eh? did you run with the bulls?

No you should definitely laugh, bull fighting etc in Central and Southern America is very (even more) barbaric than the rather gentile version practiced in the peninsular and Southern France. It is ironic that bullfighting started in the Basque Country (from Greek origins), and is now seen as an icon of spanishness (I guess I don't need to remind you about the Basques not considering themselves to be Spanish).
Yes of course we (not the children) ran with the bulls, Christ you have to take some risks in your life, remind yourself that you are alive, remind yourself of the frailty of the human condition, remind yourself that George Bush would not do it...
Great holiday thanks, Pamplona is just an hour or so away by car, I have friends there. Forgetting the controversy concerning animal things, it has to be the best street party in Europe. None of the crap you get at Nottinghill carnival (not forgetting that a carnival is a meat celebration), just total good vibes one big family. The bull run take a few minutes first thing in the morning, the rest of the day is like Glastonbury without the mud and the wankers.
Another holiday coming up!! Bilbo week of festival (Aste Nagusia) Semana Grande Bilbo 16 - 24 Aug 2008 , great time. They have bullfights, but no bull runs. I don't attend the bullfights.
Ah I love the summer time, by the way, I have sunflowers as flowers now, tomatoes coming out of my ears, pimentos dripping from the plants, it is crazy 42 degrees centigrade yesterday, hottest day of the year. I have to water everything three times a day!!

Welcome back AXJ - hope your holiday was a good one. Nice to see that you're treating bull as seriously as usual.

Thanks MKG, great tip if ever you should try it, get the feck out of the way as quickly as possible, then run after them and hope they don't turn round, which they do rather too often!
The people running in front train all year for the event, and those whom haven't and try, wind up in hospital.

I didn't know that carnival meant a meat celebration but now that you mention it and looking at the prefix carn-

. So the trick is to run behind the bulls then! I've never been there but it's somewhere where all the Aussies and Kiwis that I have known in London have gone as it's just one of those 'must do/go' places!

As in chili con carne (chili with meat). Carnival is the traditional Xian celebration before lent, a period when it is traditionally forbidden to eat meat. So they had a big meaty nosh up. Anglo Saxons seem to prefer pancakes these days.
It is true pamplona is full of tourists, they are usually the people who get hurt, or alternatively just get in the way of the true enthusiasts, I am as guilty of this as any other non-native I am sure. I haven't checked the league table for injuries this year. I'll get back to you

How strange, it works fine for me, goes straight to a bbc news web page with a video on it. You may get an advert first on the video as you are in France. Best tell the Beeb, as you can see worked for MKG as well.
