As I've been ironing I've been mulling over names for the millionth time, daft really as a boy's name is sorted and we should find out tomorrow whether we need to come up with a girl's name. I was wondering what names you would choose if it didn't sound daft with your surname, give the child amusing initials or if your other half didn't hate it?

For me for a girl it would definitely be Hebe. My husband absolutely hates it and isn't about to change his mind any time soon, as his stance hasn't changed since DD was on the way 6 1/2 years ago! I think it's a beautiful name though, and sucks ya boo to the playground idiots who would tease her about hebee gebees etc. It's far too beautiful a name - in my everso 'umble opinion - to let that stand in the way! DH knows that if it's a girl and he goes under a bus before she's born she will be a Hebe!

At the moment the best we can do is Maria as a middle name for a girl, after DH's amazing grandmother who is 102 at the end of this month. We're at a complete loss for a first name. I'm hoping someone else's fantasy first name might be the one!

I rather like Amelia Rose - but Chris says it sounds too poncy!
Have you thought about looking up the meaning of the names too - that way you could have a combination that makes a statement - but be careful - the combination of my sisters name translates as the fair fat one!

we had loads of girls names when ollie was on the way,shame he was a boy really! We especially liked Evelyn (evie for short) and Rowan (mostly usedfor a boy these days but a very old english girls name)

I would like Estella, Rebecca and Madeline - good luck with an impossible task!

Sophie is the only name we could agree on which fitted with our surname.
We both liked Jennifer though, but Jennifer Oliver didn't sound right.
I liked Daisy, but our surname is Oliver, my husband is called James (Jamie) Oliver and a certain fat-lipped chef has a daughter called Daisy.

If soph had been a boy she would have been called Clark Vincent.

I live near a hippy town, and some of the names are er.. intersting. I did like 'meadow' though

With our surname being Jones we had 8 months of debating pros and cons of Indiana, Tom or Grace.

Needless to say that common sense prevailed and George won out.

The Welsh name Carys means Love - can't get a more beautiful meaning!

If we were having a pink one rather than a blue one, our names of choice were Rowan (my mum hates it, thinks it's too Wicker Man, which is exactly the reason I like it, LOL!) or Erin. I think OH would possibly have got his own way and she would have been Erin Margaret (Margaret after his mum).

We lost a baby in 2001 that we called Seren, which is Welsh for 'star', which I think it lovely.

When I was about 14 I decided that I would want to call my girl Rhionagg - I looked up a Scots Gallic dictionary, and that was the feminine for star (I may have got the spelling wrong)

OH would never have it (a bit on the hippy side for him) We agreed when I was pregers if it was a girl it would be Kate (after one of our favourite songs) then we had an argument while I was in labour - actually pushing - about 10 mins before she came out - I decided a girl had to be called Rose, because 'sweet child of mine' (guns and roses, lead singer being Axel Rose) was on the radio.

She was called Kate and then, after OH went home, I changed it... to the name that OH had always wanted from the start. When OH arrived at the hospital at 9am the next day I had to tell him I had changed her name... He decided he was allowed to add another name so her middle name is from OH's Gran, who died the week before we knew we were expecting.

Funnily enough I really like Rowan for a girl too, and Eva, Evie etc, but we aren't going to be needing them as this baby is a boy! He'll be Maximillian, Max or Maxim for short, and to be quite honest I'm absolutely scared stiff about having a boy lol! I know what I'm doing with girls, DD is a dream and my stepson seems to have been going through an 'awkward phase' since I first met him seven years ago, but really I'm absolutely thrilled the baby is okay and I'm fascinated to see how a son of mine and DH's will turn out. Apparently DH was an angel as a child and in my opinion he's a wonderful man, so no doubt this one will follow suit.

Still a bit nervous though!

I don't know which mine is but if it is a girl it will be Lucy Isla (our daughter is Beth Iona) and a boy James Robert (family names). Funnily enough for two very indecisive people who have been very decided about names from the start each time and not dithered at all.

So he's a boy! If he'd been a girl I was going to add my vote for Amelia. Lovely name. I've also met someone called Sorrell which I think is a lovely name.

I had a rat named Sorrell! In fact I think I've probably used up all my favourite names on the huge amounts of rescued pets I've had over the years!

We like Rowan or Willow because we already have an Ash! I like very short names which can't be abreviated.

Off to Shambala festival next week - last year I heard the most wierd & wonderful hippy named kids Starsky was one!

Oooh Mrs D, another boy for 'Ish - The Next Generation'! Fantastic!! Everyone else I know seems to be expecting girls...same thing happened when I was having Ellis - there were 13 of us (school, uni and work mates) all pregnant at the same time, and Ellis ended up being the only boy out of all of them.

I love Max, think it's a lovely name. We have the problem of having to fit a firstname around 'Malcolm' as a middle name (OH's dad, as Ellis' middle name is Peter, after my dad) and a surname that also begins with M (McNeil), so we ran through some M names and discovered that they all sounded a bit clunky. We toyed with Eoin (pronounced Owen) for a while, but now we seem to have settled on Finlay Malcolm McNeil - Fin for short. At least Ellis can actually say 'Fin'....he can't say his Ls yet, so pronounces his own name as 'Aye-is', but he comes and kisses his brother in my tummy and says 'Hiya Finny!!'...

Don't worry about not being used to having a boy....if yours is anything like Ellis, he'll be easy-peasy once you get used to being wee'd on at every given opportunity! And boys' toys are so much more fun than girls' toys too......although you may find that in a couple of years time you know every episode of Thomas and Friends off my heart and find yourself shouting 'You are causing confusion and delay' at him in shops!

(Then again, saying that, Ellis is also a big fan of Fifi and the Flowertots and Peppa Pig as well....)
