I'm fed up of picking wild mushrooms, taking them home to ID, then not being able to find them in my books - even the one that shows inedible mushrooms. So now I've found some growing in my own garden, I thought I'd get the camera out and ask here.

They're growing in the back corner of my garden where there are elder bushes, a small apple tree, two fences, a lilac and a load of brambles on the other side of one of the fences. It's also been a bit of an overflow composting area, where I sometimes chuck grass clippings, used compost and dead plants, etc.

They do smell quite mushroomy.

Please tell me I can eat them. So far, the only wild mushrooms I've eaten have been shaggy caps.

No, I never thought of that. They've all died off now anyway

Hi, have you got a copy of "How to Identify Edible Mushrooms" by Patrick Harding, Tony Lyon, & Gill Tomblin? I got one last year and its absolutely brilliant! The notes on identification are really clear, and the illustrations are excellent.

You can't eat them. I don't know what they are. I'd guess they might be some sort of Collybia, but could easily be Cortinarius. Collybias are generally inedible and most Cortinarius are poisonous. There's no commonly-eaten fungus that looks anything like these.

Thanks Geoff. I haven't noticed any growing back this year. If they do, I'll destroy them so my little girl doesn't get hold of them. She's not one for putting things in her mouth (except bogies ), but better safe than sorry.

I'd bury them in the compost heap if I were you. They won't harm the invertebrates.
