I am going away for Christmas any suggestions on how to keep my window box onions and herbs alive for the week I am away?

G'Day Andy,

You build a capillary bed!

Get a broccoli box (polystyrene - no holes) or some such, half or more fill with COARSE sand, full a PET drink bottle and upturn it into the sand. That is an oversimplification and I do have an article on it somewhere, but it gives you the idea. The water filters into the sand and keeps the soil moist by capillary action. I have a simplified system (just the sand and plastic trays) that I use to keep my seedlings moist in my greenhouse.

Anyway, give it a go and let me know if it doesn't make sense!
