Hi I hope this is in the right place.

I have got a guitar for my OH off of freecycle, its not in the best condition, i would like to repaint it but am worried i might just make it worse.... :?

Could any one tell me if its some thing I could do myself?
or
Can you get it done professionally? and how much does it cost?

Thanks :flower:

It's probably better off in either the recycle section or the crafts section, but I don't know if you can move it or you need a moderator.

Is it an electric guitar with a solid wood body? If so, I've had good results with car paint - sand the surface back a bit (you don't need to take all the paint off, just give the other coats something to stick to) then spray a with a primer and then your chosen colour. The more thin coats you put on of your final colour (rather than putting too much on at once), the better the finish will be.

If it's an acoustic or hollow bodied guitar you can do the same thing, but be a bit more careful with the sanding, and don't forget that too thick a finish might reduce the resonance of the body.

this tip would ONLY work for electric guitars NOT for a normal acoustic.
the latter is mostly wood with a special laquer which would be affected by the car paint I am afraid.
it would have been a different thing if you had wanted to decorate it but even then........I would seek professional advice.
an acoustic guitar would be better off to be cleaned and polished (ask a music shop) as old guitars usually improve with age and playing.
if it is a well known brand guitar painting would do more harm than good.

good luck!
