What to plant under trees

My local scouts have a large garden with some very large overhanging trees. They would like to plant some shrubs etc that provide edible fruit.
Anyone have any experience of this, or any suggestions please?

Red currants and gooseberries are native to woodland in northern Europe so should grow reasonably if it's not too dense.
I used to go picking wild redcurrants in the woods when I was a lad

Look for information on forest gardening (it´s a permaculture thing so permaculture associations might be a place to start), that should give you some ideas.
Depending on how shady the spot is they may need to do a little tree surgery to provide some light - provide some firewood for the campfire

Good old strawberries are edge-of-woodland plants too, as are blackberries (invest in the thornless variety) and rasberries.
On the veg front, most brassicas will cope with some shade, if it's not too dense, if they want to pop in a couple of beds.
Let us know how they get on,
