Going, going, gone (Human rights in the UK)

Seems to be another aspects of our human rights that has gone down the pan without our consultation or even knowledge-

If you are "blacklisted" you can have your bank accounts frozen and can't even buy shoes. This is what can happen to anyone who is charged with being suspected of funding terrorism and whats worse you won't be told why.

Sound like the Trial by Kafka? Nope this is present day U.K.

Dear Andy,

Disgusting, as well as Kafkaesque! It's like the witch/heretic burning craze of Stuart times. Or the McCarthyism of fifties AmeriKa! I'm going to pass on the link ..... or will that be interpreted as assisting terrorism?

Just be very careful which websites you visit, magazines you suscribe to and friends you converse with. Who knows which of them could get you on the list.....

Love and Peace
Jim

I would like to say that I'm shocked by this - but in truth you just now degrees of this have been happening for a good while, certainly since 9/11.

What worries/disgusts/embarrasses me most is that Joe Public (people like my mother) read the Daily M41l or watch N4t4sh4 on channel 5's version of this story and find it perfectly acceptable.

So how do we stop it? Even discussions like this make us potential targets.

Pass it on, tell everyone you know and write to your MP.

As a 'known left-wing activist' on Maggie Thatcher's hit list because I collected for the miners' families durring the strike, this ain't owt new! I had my phone tapped, post intercepted & an old Ford parked outside for weeks with two blokes in watching my every move. I got so fed up I knocked on their window & asked them if they'd like a cuppa!

It is sickening. But these things are being arranged through new anti-terror legislation all the time. The government is scared of its own public.

My husband has been recently refused a security pass to do gardening work on police sites (he has worked there for over 15 years). He was given no reason, as not to endanger the sources, but apparently he a security risk now. Why? We will never know. I suppose he is a devil of an artist with the hedge cutter.

MW, I too was a left-wing activist. So I'm used to the shenanigans of Special Branch - my file must be a foot thick the number of times they've taken my photo.

This is different though - it makes H block look benign. British citizens disappearing for years with no charges ever being brought.

Certainly frightening but then are any political group any different ? I was interested in standing as an MP for my town but was warned off in no uncertain circumstances because " it is and will remain a safe labour seat"

I don't scare easily and when someone gets in my face they get bloodied on the way out of my face but this episode over several weeks scared the crap out of me.

The sad thing is we can't do anything about it and if you think we can think about the case today where the police will be investigating the accusation that MI5 was involved in the torture of that benjamin whatever his name is in Morroco and Pakistan et al.

Do you really think that the police will get anywhere when they rely on the security services for their intel on "real terrorists"

Gawd knows I'll be a terrorist for letting my dog have a shit next......

Mods.... If i miss the birthday announcements for the next few days remember to ask the secret service if you can have me back.

P.S. HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT OUR SECRET SERVICE HAVE THE SAME INITIALS AS HITLERS SCHUTZSTAFFEL OR SS........

Oh yeah - add me too!
It was scary being friends with miners during the early 8o's - now they are either

1. unemployed - as they never worked again
2. Alcoholic
3. dead - one suicide and one 'unconfirmed circumstances'
4. living and working in South African mines

Nothing would surprise me in any country as to what politicians would stoop to! :cussing:

Dear Muddywitch and Green Aura,

It's nice to know I'm among friends. I thought Grosvenor Square in 68/69 was fun but didn't get photoed until Snotty Roberts (the unlamented Saint Margaret Hilda) early 80s when as Actor/Playwrite of "Peter Kropotkins' Magic Street Theatre (Minds changed, insurrections entertained!) we actually courted the telphoto lenses of Special Branch. Getting old now but still disreputable and I'm passing this link on to everyone in my email contacts. The listening posts at Menwith Hill are going to be adding lots more people to the list as a result.

Love and Peace
Jim

I've emailed my MP asking him to watch the clip and then ask some questions in the house as to why this piece wasn't debated in the chamber.
