Cooking Apple Haul

The girls and I went to visit my parents today, and helped ourselves to another bag full of great looking cooking apples
But I am already crumbled, pied, baked and stewed out as hubby is not keen and I have made quite a few and put them in the freezer. Tomorrow I will make some apple cakes and freeze some of those too, they will come in handy when the babe arrives.
I was thinking of adding some to hedgerow jam. But what else can I do please??
Thanks xx

Apple chutney is my favourite though I don't know how it would work with cooking apples. I expect you just need a bit more sugar?

Dowerhouse chutney! My friend arrived yesterday with a huge bag of plums and I had some apples from my mums tree so I set too making some.

Thanks everyone!! I think I am going to make chutney with some, and store the rest.
Where does everyone store their chutney and jam? I have now run out of room in the kitchen cupboards, would the garage be ok?

I store mine in the bathroom

as it's a huge room with loads of cupboards but I'm sure that the garage will be fine as long as it doesn't drop below zero.

Freeze them stewed?
Dried apple rings?
I heard that early apples don't store as well as the later ones - so probably best to check them weekly.

Ha ha it's a bathroom minus a loo in case you were feeling icky! It's the coldest room of the house winter and summer and has enormous cupboards which are full of all sorts of stuff including spuds, jams and pickles; it's also where I have my 'English' shelves full of all the 'can't get here' goodies that I bring back!

Well it is next door to the kitchen, which they should have made bigger and the bathroom smaller, so it gets the overspill!

Definitely use them in jam. I almost always make apple and something jam. So far this year it has been apple and rhubarb, apple and plum, apple and gooseberry. I'm thinking of starting my own brand of Appland jam

There are enough empty in town

I finally got a few apples off my trees and my they are a scabby wormy diseased looking mess! Last year there were gazillions of apples with hardly a bug and no diseases, this year is awful! But I'm used to it now.

I found a nice recipe for 'spicy apple ketchup' in Country Living Magazine (at the doctors' surgery, not mine!)
I will try and find it for you and post it up here. It had green chililes and ginger in it from memory.
