Someone asked a wee way back about cutting tyres...

Have just had one of my inventor mates arrive today with the most brilliant trough to go in a goat pen (or what ever pen).

He cut a huge tractor tyre in half with a chainsaw! I am so impressed, and told him so. I really did not think it was possible to cut tyres easily, but he just shrugged and said "Not much a chainsaw can't cut".

So there ya go - just had to pass it on.

That's a really good use of an old tractor tyre. Have seen one turned into a table that looks really cool... wasn't cut in half, just the whole thing put on the floor with a piece of wood on the top - the one I saw was painted up by artists and used in a community field. I've got a photo somewhere.

oooh Shirl. Must say I like that idea too. Am already getting a visual of some funky tables scattered across the farm. If you happen across the pic, will you post it? I would love a peek.

I fancy doing one of these too - must admit that it did look cool. I've got lots of photos from the ecofair that I saw these at - including ideas for musical instruments etc... I must make use of that webspace I've got from my isp and get some stuff online.

Take care cutting car tyres though. Don't some of them have wire inside? That could be very nasty if it meets a chainsaw...

Couldnt you use an angle grinder? That way the metal wire wouldnt be a problem.

Be very, VERY careful with angle grinders, they have almost as much capacity for mayhem as a chainsaw, but are for more likely to catch while cutting the tyre!

I have decided this table is a MUST DO...

Have organised for a second feed trough. (I guess it is the other half of the one he cut last time....not sure) and am going to try and track some full tractor tyres down and give this a whirl.

Have just been sitting here looking at it. And there's no doubt about it. At least one of them needs to go into one of our yards.

Also sidetracked on another thought. A while back I bought some really thick large black bags (used for what we call cleanaway bins) and I am thinking if I towered tyres, i could probably line the inside of them with these bags and create deep drinking troughs for the ponies or for catching extra water. So might give that a whirl too, I think and see if it is workable.
