Our Community Garden

In the early part of this year, a number of local villagers (myself included) announced their intention to provide a community garden suitable for people of all ages and levels of fitness wanting to grow their own produce. The publicity campaign resulted in a tremendous response – with 67 names already on the allocation list, and enquiries are still being received.

We were delighted to learn on Wednesday that funding for the whole start-up project has been awarded by the Scottish Governnment's Climate Challenge Fund.

We plan to establish a sustainable organic community garden growing fruit, vegetables and herbs. Funding will be used in the construction of 54 raised beds, including a number of specially adapted beds for young children and disabled gardeners; alongside a number of wormeries, a secure tool shed and potting shelter. A small orchard of fruit trees and a soft fruit growing area will be established, and areas will be set aside for biodiversity, allowing nature to flourish alongside the garden.

We aim to help villagers reduce carbon emissions by preventing local fruit and vegetable waste going to landfill as kitchen waste will be composted in the wormeries, with the resulting nutrient-rich compost used within the garden. In addition, we will be reducing food-miles and plastics waste associated with much shop bought produce; as well as save money by growing our own food. There are many opportunities for education, from children learning about nature to novice gardeners receiving assistance from our skilled horticulturalists.

The garden promotes healthier lifestyles for all, and encourages walking and cycling to the garden. Residents’ quality of life will be improved by bringing together all age groups and abilities, from toddlers to senior citizens, in a friendly community atmosphere.

(Sorry it all sounds rather pompous, I've just nicked it off my press release for the local newspapers!!!!!!!!).

Sounds tremendous - if I ever get a bit of time to myself, I'll pop over and have a peek!

Anyone who wanted to come would be made very, very welcome! We're hoping to get everything up and running for April 2010 - fortunately the vast majority of the labour is not dependent on the weather; but there is a minor obstacle by the name of Sport Scotland in the way at the moment, as the preferred site is a very dilapidated - nay - dangerously marshy - football pitch (unused for at least 15 years) that SS want to save; so it might go to the Executive, but we have been told we have every chance of success.

We're really hoping that this will become a legacy project, and that other communities will come and visit us and learn how to set up one of their own. That's the dream, anyway.

If I remember right, you've got loads of great things happening in Perthshire. Trellis Scotland probably have info on that.

Honestly, if you have any questions do feel free to ask - if I can't answer them myself, I'll know a man (or woman) who can...whether it's pricing up fencing, Sepa regs for septic tanks, we'll help you. That's why we are here - to help other communities do the same.

If you want Climate Challenge Fund money, though, you have to move FAST. Get in touch with them ASAP and register you're interested and have a chat with someone. They are brilliant, but time is running out.

Hey you two, do you go to the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens events? If so I've probably met you! I'm waiting to hear about a CCF application to set up a community garden/free bicycle-powered veg box scheme for OAPs in Stirling!

I'm gonna be at the next event in Edinburgh on the 30th, if you havent been to any I strongly recommend it - I've learned so much useful stuff from them!
