I am going to sing the praises of anyone involved in open source projects. I have been using the odd free trial software package here and there to do stuff with this site,which is ok for a month or so then you are faced with the decision wheather or not to buy it.

Over the last couple of months I have started to discover that there are a load of goodies for people to use for free. - just downloaded clip creator 1.6 now http://kozlowski.umesci.maine.edu/clip_ ... index.html# and it is exactly what I was looking for and works like a dream.

You might also want to look at sites like: http://sourceforge.net and its sister site http://freshmeat.net.

They used to be aimed primarily at the Linux (open source operating system) market, but there's loads of Windows and posix unix* stuff there too. (Mac OSX is a posix unix - but there's also a lot of dedicated OSX programs too)

*Posix unix is any of a number of different unix operating systems, like Solaris, Linux, OSX, BSD etc, which all have the same "standards" so if it's written for a posix unix, it'll run on any of those platforms. Windows XP, although based on a unix kernel, has so many Microsoft proprietry alterations that it's not a posix unix, so you can't run these programs. Microsoft's loss in my books!

Forgot to add, if you're looking for video products for OSX, you should also be aware of VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and MPlayer http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/ - both of which will play stuff that QuickTime won't (like those avi's created by your mate on their Windows machine with dogdy codecs that only Windows could invent!). They're also both open source and both darn useful tools!

Cheers for the links, yep I do use mplayer it is a good bit of kit.
