Ok ... I tyried this a couple of weeks ago and nice fish it was ...before buying more as I had nver heard of it the old fella googled ...

We are being bombarded about what to eat and not to eat... our industeies are all made to dispose of the yakky stuff propely so it does not enter the food chain... they stopped chickens being fed by dead bit of chickes ... and more ... as is right ... why the ****

Oh dear - I think I may have some of this in my freezer - one of those - lets try it moments in a supermarket. I WON'T be doing that again. In fact I wouldn't even feed it to my cats!

Cheap in France - that's a joke. The only 'affordable' fish in this country is mackerel and, sometimes, sardines when they are on special offer.

I haven't noticed this fish for sale here, although I've heard of the name. Having seen the fish farms on Rick Stein's recent series I would have given anything raised like that on the Mekong a wide berth anyway!

I feel the same Milims... I can't put it back in the food chain so the piece I got will go in the bin in the morning when taking it out for the binman ... I feel really odd as I never throw food out...

My FIL was served this in a restaurant while they were touring Scotland on the way back from seeing us.

He found it really tasty, so having never heard of it before, he'd looked it up, and found similar info. Needless to say - he won't be buying it again either.

I'm really pleased this thread was started. I have been going to ask for a while if anyone knows of a website where I can learn about fish, because I've only ever bought Haddock, Cod and Coley Last time I went to the fish mongers I decided to buy something else - Ling, Red Bream and Catfish - to try them. But not having any knowledge about fish, I wasn't sure if they were a better choice than haddock and cod (sustainability-wise), how to cook them or anything. However, this thread has prompted me to get off my lazy butt and google a bit, and I have found this site. I haven't had chance to have a thorough read of it, but it tells you which fish the "MCS believes are fished within sustainable levels using methods which do not cause unacceptable damage to the environment or non-target species".

There was a piece on the telly a couple of weeks ago telling of fish & chip shops selling this stuff as cod!!!

There's been several fish & chip shops down London way that have been prosecuted for selling this fish as cod. I'm sure there's alot more selling it too. Apparently if it crumbles instead of flaking into big flakes then it's dodgy fish and not cod or haddock.

When we move to Cornwall in January we will be fishing ourselves, that way we know what we're eating and it will be line caught so not doing any damage to fish stocks... good news is (for those living on the coast) it's free to fish from the shore so it costs nothing apart from your rod and tackle which we picked up for £30 brand new.

We once bought some "white fish" from ASDA... NEVER again it tasted like ammonia and even OH couldn't eat it it tasted that bad... lord only knows what constitutes "white fish"

If it's not Organic / Free Range meat or line caught, sustainable fish caught by ourselves then it ain't going on our plate anymore!

I only realised that I had fed my old fella some of this a couple of weeks ago under the name of "bassa" ... he is funny about fish and tends to only eat it if it comes coated and labelled ... It was Youngs he enjoyed it at time and is angry now about being fed crap .... Its not fair that this can happed, we spend good money of what we think is good food ... Well I wouldn't eat Youngs fish but sometimes one has to compromise So next time I see our fishmonger I shall have the printed info for him ...

oh and sorry just looked back at my original post and the typos ... I blame the panga fish...
