how can i use rabbit droppings?

Post: # 188107Post barefootlinzi »

i have 1, soon to be 2, spoilt house bunny. are the droppings she produces useful in compost, or can it be added direct to the soil? or as a mulch? she does her wees in a litter tray, i use wood pellets in them, is the wee soaked wood pellets (and hay that i put there for her to eat while she does her business) useful in some way?

Rabbits are vegetarians, and so, therefore, is rabbit poo (if you see what I mean). Yes, stick it in the compost heap.

Not sure about rabbit pee, though.

Rabbit droppings make good garden fertilizer. We had rabbits (and guinea pigs) as children and alwayscomposted their bedding and droppings first. This site, however, says it's fine to use the droppings 'fresh' directly on the garden. http://www.threelittleladiesrabbitry.com/fertilizer.php

Not sure it's for everyone - my sisters dog would probably eat them, he eats everything else, catfood, chicken food, stones, it doesn't matter to scooby!

You could put it straight onto the Rhubarb, but I prefer custard myself
Seriously, though, rabbit poo is safe to put straight onto the garden, but keep it away from young seedlings. Alternatively, just add it the the compost heap.

The reason it's safe to put on the garden is that rabbits very considerately always pee in the same place and poo everywhere else. We shovel a decent amount under new seedlings and they absolutely thrive on it. It's not called bunny gold for nothing

How reassuring that its doing the garden some good, they put it there themselves  is just the munching end that annoys me
