Anyone know of any good guide books about gathering shellfish?
I live near the coast, and judging by the shells, there should be cockles and razor clams and scallops and all sorts of good things to eat! If only i knew where to start.....!

I don't know the answer I'm afraid but am also interested in finding out more. I think The River Cottage Fish book is worth checking out. Hugh Fearnley Wotsit. I remember seeing him diving for scallops somewhere which is beyond my capabilities unfortunately. Mussels should be more accessible although whether they are the right ones I don't know.

The river cottage book is pretty good IMHO, so worth checking out. Mussels are fine it's more a question of where and when you harvest them really, like choosing a clean beach & making sure they're well away from any sewer outlet pipes.

There's a book called 'Seaweed and Eat It' by Fiona Houston & Xa Milne ISBN 978-0-7535-1341-5 and although the section on shellfish isn't that big, it is good. The book is family foraging orientated and covers all kinds of stuff.........makes you want to get out there and rummage
