Other veg to plant now

Post: # 207288Post muckypig »

Hi again

Well I kicked off with spuds to grow now and I will be off to Dundry Nurseries later today in search of Charlotte spuds to plant.

We use a lot of Onions, shallots, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower and carrots and if we could start to grow some of our own it could save us a small fortune. I have access to a greenhouse so can plant some inside there if necessary.

Onions, shallots and garlic are most popular....I have some Jermor shallots from a good friend but not sure if I can plant them now?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help :thumbright:

Cheers

I was just going to say that! I don't think you'll get seed potatoes at this time of year, but if you've got a few grotty ones that have started chitting (sprouting) bung them in some compost in a big tub, something with drainage holes, and they'll produce a small but tasty crop by Christmas or early new year.

Plant japanese onion now seeds in the south sets further north, they will be ready in May when you just run out of maincrop from this year, but they won't keep so eat straight away.We do garlic in november too. It's worth trying some scallions now too.

We don't eat a lot of scallions, I like them in salads and some stir fry dishes but the rest of the family aren't so keen. I find some can actually be quite bitter. Can someone recommend a sweeter variety?

I love shallots especially the "banana" ones...easy to peel and they taste wonderful  I have 3 sets (3 x 12) of Jermor shallots...my first attempt at growing them
