Thanks Big Al, you've just prompted this. In the course of tidying up pre and post Christmas I must have filled an old kindling bag with at least 101 Jiffy bags, all sizes - I know I'm an untidy mare at the best of times

Anyway, any ideas for using them up would be most welcome - I suppose I'd better start it off

1. Storing seeds by type - we sort them into brassicas, cucurbits, solanaceae, salads leaves etc. Keeps them at a relatively even temp, dry and easy to get at the one's you want.
2. My DD offered the following - beating people round the head or re-using (I just don't know where she gets it from! )

Incidentally, re-using isn't such a simple option as it might seem. Most of them arrive with laser printed labels stuck on, which you can't get off without wrecking the bag. Sticking another label over the top often doesn't mask the original one either.

3 have a de clutter and list unwanted things on ebay - use these jiffy bags as packaging when you get a sale

I have this problem too so will watch this thread with interest.

4. Burst all the bubbles on the bubble plastic lined ones, then go back to the beginning of this thread and wonder what to do with the packaging......

5. Cut up to wrap around anything delicate that you are posting to someone. Then put in another jiffy bag?

6. Chuck them in a cupboard like I do because they might come in handy one day......

7) Donate to the local charity shop. Our local 'mind' shop will take them & so will LOROS (local hospice charity), but Age UK won't. The staff would like to but orders from on high mean they can't

9) Use them to store delicate items when moving house or just to store delicate items that you need to store safely.

10) If you are sending a present and a card, write the address on the card envelope and stick the envelope securely over the old address label.

What is a jiffy bag?

jiffy-bag = stout envelope lined with bubble-wrap. used for sending delicate things in the mail. Probably a trademark.

what do YOU call them?

Padded Mailer or Padded Envelope. I've also heard Bubble Mailer on occasion.
I like "jiffy bag".

There is a rather good joke from Stephen Fry about "being there in a Jiffy"

You need to change the the word being, and put it in the presence tence looking forward, but it always makes me smile.

Advertise them on Freecycle for e-bayers if you do not sell on e-bay yourself.
To re-use them to send something else, just put a clean piece of paper on top of the old address (quarter of A4 or half), attach with sellotape and write new address on.

I cross the old address through with a large kiss in marker pen, write P.T.O on the bottom right corner and use the other side for the next sending. Or write the word FROM before the address if it is mine and turn over for the next recipient. Use them for nuts and bolts which have come from a dismantled item and tie to the item e.g. pine bed, cot etc. so you don't lose them and the bag is tough enough not to let the bolts poke through.

11) Use them to store Jiffy bags.

cover your feet in mayonnaise, stick feet in two large jiffy bags and leave for an hour or two. remove, wash feet and you can either very easily trim dry skin and bad nails, or just enjoy your baby soft feet skin lol.
