My mum keeps chickens and is getting a couple more this week. She is having hens who are evictees from a battery farm - apparently, when they lay fewer than 6 eggs a week they are regarded as being used-up, and are slaughtered. She says they're a bit traumatised and need to re-learn how to be a chicken, but she thinks they will settle and work out fine. They cost £2.50 each. If you're still interested i can ask for contact details. Oh, i think there come from birmingham. If that's too far there're probably farms in your area that'd do the same thing.

I got my ex-bats from here. They are great, loads of personality, good eggs too [thru the winter even] They were a little nervous to start with, but now chase dog and cats around the garden, eat slugs and bugs and generally dig everything up !

Two and a half quid is a lot for an ex-batt.Round here you can buy yearling hens(really 18 months old) from a ommercial FR flock for a quid a piece. If you want 24 week POL hens check out Cyril Bason in Craven Arms they'll deliver to you.
