Oat Biscuits
We like oat biscuits, so I suggested we make our own, thought it couldn't be difficult. Well the OH made some oat cake, pretty much the same as oat biscuits, slightly thicker, bit less fat, but a touch of water with porridge oats and wheat flour. OH reported mixture very sticky and difficult to roll out, I suggested oiled cling film over and then roll.
But the big problem is how long they take to bake, hours and hours, some 5 hours, totally uneconomic, even with a few loaves in at the same time (initally).
Presumably actual biscuits being more fat and that bit thinner would be quicker - anyone got any experience, what's the best oven temperature and expected time in the oven?

Re: Oat Biscuits
No idea Graham, but I do have a recipe for making hobnob type cookies if you want it.

Can't help with oat biscuits Graham, but I made some almond biscuits today and they took 10 minutes at about 200c or more precisely Gas 4 on my antiquated oven.
The only problem I find with home made biscuits is they don't keep, well ours don't anyway ..... the biscuit tin always seems to be empty.

Re: Oat Biscuits
Odsox very interested in your recipe because there is such a mismatch between your time in the oven and ours, although the fact that your biscuits go off is perhaps because they are not fully dried out.
does sugar in the recipe affect the cooking time, as I do not eat sugar, just can't stand the taste.

Re: Oat Biscuits
lol -- i am guessing that oddsox's biscuits "don't keep" because they are eaten too quickly, not because of any culinary disaster!!
I make (and sell) flapjacks - a mixture of oats, syrup, sugar & marg/butter -- they take 20-25 mins to cook. They are still soft when taken out of the oven, but firm up on cooling. This is true of most biscuits - if you bake them till hard then you are over-cooking them.
What was the recipe you used? 5 hours in an oven seems far too long for any sort of biscuit -- thats the time i would cook a large rich fruti cake!

Re: Oat Biscuits
Here you go Tony - I fear these won't keep very well either!
3 ½ oz butter
2 ½ oz demerara sugar
pinch salt
2 oz self raising flour
4 oz oats
1 bar plain chocolate
Cream butter and sugar.
Knead in a pinch of salt, self raising flour and oats.
Put heaped teaspoonfuls of the mixture onto a greased baking tray and press them down into a biscuit shape.
Cook at gas mark 4 until just about to go brown (about 7 mins).
Cool the biscuits on a wire tray, then cover them with melted chocolate.
Leave the coated biscuits for an hour or so until the chocolate has set.
Of course you don't have to use chocolate but.......I can't think how to finish this sentence

Re: Oat Biscuits
Thanks for that Maggie, I will make some next ... when we have ploughed our way through the yesterday's batch, so probably tomorrow.
Graham, as Marmalady says, they are still soft when they come out of the oven and just coloured, then they go crisp when cooled.
The ones I made yesterday are ........
100g butter
100g sugar
150g flour
100g ground almonds
2 tsp almond extract
1 egg.
Cream butter and sugar, add egg & almonds and mix, then add flour and combine.
Put it fridge for a while to stiffen.
Roll into small balls about an inch diameter, place on a greased baking tray and flatten a bit.
Bake at 200c for about 10 mins or so (just starting to brown at the edges. Makes about 2 dozen
Eat at least 2 at a time and repeat process every other day.

Re: Oat Biscuits
I've also got a recipe for Rich Tea biscuits that I devised from reading the ingredients off a packet.
They also disappear remarkably quickly for plain biscuits.

Re: Oat Biscuits
Thanks for all your replies. The missus is away at the moment, so can't be sure of the mix and recipe, but it should have been simple just flour, oats, butter (or oil) and some water, mixed rolled out to about 6mm and baked. perhaps I'll have a go without the water whilst she's away.

Can't remember how many we got - I'm thinking quite a few but they didn't last long - especially as we made them with vegan marg so the gal could eat them.
