Have now - thanks Shiney.
Pretty gruesome isn't it. I'm guessing that isn't the case for organic dairy??? Anyone know?

No, not even non-organic in Europe. Keeping them indoors all year round is not allowed in organic, but sometimes practised in non-organic. Growth hormones are banned in Europe, so is tail docking. Calves almost always are separated from their mothers at birth (or after two or three days); after all, the milk is for sale... In organic whole milk is fed; in non-organic it's usually milk replacer (much cheaper). I must admit I'd never heard of it being made with blood, so can't comment on that. Oh, and antibiotics are used in organic only if nothing else will help, and then the withdrawal period (the time before the milk or meat can be sold for human consumption as organic) is 2 or 3 times as long as in conventional. There are also quite strict regulations on space allowance for each cow. But of course, they are not milked by hand any more... That really is not possible, except for very small numbers for your own private use! Quite frankly, a lot of the machines are much better than some hand milkers used to be; much more gentle on the teats!Shirlz2005 wrote:I'm guessing that isn't the case for organic dairy??? End of discourse on organic dairying!

(I could go on, but I'd better not!)

I fear that many of them will be exported again - don't know whether it has actually started yet. The protests have, though. In the past (during the ban), a lot of them were killed at birth, because it simply wasn't viable to raise them. Sad, this "production" method.Muddypause wrote:What's the current situation in this country regarding veal calves and milk production, Ina, now that the ban on exports has been lifted? Are the non-organic male calves that result from dairy production inevitably destined for veal crates again?
