That's brilliant for a balcony. I wonder what veg or fruit you could grow? I think it would be great for strawberries.

Last year I was given some long thin pallets. I lined them with chicken feed bags and planted onions in them. I imagine they'd be good for carrots or parsnips as well. It'd look really good painted.

This is a very interesting idea!

I use some pallets as a makeshift wall to obscure unsightly parts of the garden (equipment, supplies, tanks, etc.). I wonder how these might hold up if arranged in series to make a wall?

it could be interesting for some nifty little design concepts. Space permitting, I've always wanted to make cubes out of sheets of chicken fencing in ascending sizes, fill them with compost and sow seeds on the tops and on all of the sides. Maybe have them arranged in a big spiral. Or even go all out and build ascending rectangular prisms (that may not be the name, my geometry is rusty!) out of bricks or breezeblocks and then put chicken wire around each one, leaving 6 inches or something all the way round to pack with soil, so you'd have a spiral of stepping stones/pillars which are covered in chives or marjoram or something fun (would chammomile grow on it's side?)....
My general thought was that it could spiral into a central patio or raised grow area in the middle, which also had plants all around the sides.
I think i'm just getting cabin fever from the assignment I'm supposed to be doing!

That's really clever, and could be just the thing for breaking up all that boring concrete down my drive way. Hubby still needs the room to work on his cars, but I could at least have a bit of colour around when he's not there!
