fencing in chickens

how high a fence should i build to stop the chickens getting out? i know their wings will be cut so they cant fly, but how high can they flutter? we have a 10 foot wall round the garden which i dont suppose they can get over but we need to fence off the back of the garden for them or the dog will chase and possibly kill them.

A 3ft leccy fence keeps chickens with clipped wings where they should be.

Then you have more than one question, demi ...
How high can chickens flap?
How high can your dog jump?
How good is your dog at burrowing below fences?
Question 1 depends upon how big a runway they have - with a good run and a decent flapping distance, they can get up to a decent height. Having said all of that, I've never seen a chicken fence higher than four feet.

Don't forget to think about foxes......... Electric fences usually keep them out. If you are not going down that route, bury your fence 8" or so in the ground and make it at least 6-8 foot high. But don't rely on that keeping the blighters out - if they are desperate they will get over it. Or they might bite through it........ Some friends have a high fence with just a single strand of electric fencing and they have never had any problems, so who knows.....
