Tree Identification please.

On a walk a couple of days ago we came across a tree I'd not seen before. Growing on the edge of an old tip in a sort of hedgerow (pretty sparse planting though). It has thorns about 2 inches long which makes me think it's a member of the plum family. The leaves are oval, smooth edges with a little point or nipple on the end opposite the stalk and about 2 inches long by 1.5 wide. The fruit however looks a little like a very small pear about 1.5 inches diameter. Any ideas? First thoughts were quince or medlar.

from elsewhere someone has identified it as a wild pear.
