Can anyone help please?We are thinking of getting a turkey to fatten for christmas,I am told it is the right time is this correct?.

I was tempted by a few turkeys at market the other day. but I would guess the answer would be how big is the turkey now how much fattening is needed to be done?

Its not to late atall Clare, whatever you buy, get it from a reputable source, give him/her plenty of grass ect and turkey growers and finisher (when time) and all you want then is a big Oven! Happy Christmas!

nah not too late - we only got ours a week or so ago - they are 11 weeks old now tho

last year we had them about the same age at the same time and came in around the 18 lb mark by November

Well thanks all,having trouble finding a breeder am in Norfolk and there are lots of farms that only sell them ovenready!! not 11-12 weeks old as I want .do they mix well with chickens or should I keep it seperate?I have a large penn near the house full of weeds and grass would a turkey strip it like hens do?My neighbour has offered me 2 Light sussex cockerals too do they make a good eating bird?Thanks.

I think common practice is not to mix chickens and Turkeys, something about the feet of the turkeys.

I had three Turkeys a few years ago and they didn't grow very well at all.

Light Sussex get a reasonable size after 20 weeks or so, personally as they are available I would go for them, and forget the Turkeys.

Friends of ours down the lane run chickens ducks and turkeys together. They all seem to get on.
