I have only had limited use of a 2 stroke mantis tiller. Which I found it to be ideal.

The only problem is that it just did not last, maybe because I used it hard on heavy clay, and it became dam hard to start and keep running, then finally it gave up. OK I it was second hand so maybe it was on its last legs anyhow.

But there nows seems to be a lot of different makes and models on the market, 2 stoke, 4 stroke, stihl combi attachment.

Anybody any recommendations or advice they would like too share.

Have you tried adjusting the air screws GB? It explains on the PDF owners manual, on page 19, but it doesn't read right to me.

Near the air filter on the Mantis there are two screws marked H & L. With the engine stopped, gently turn each one clockwise until they just stop then turn them anticlockwise one and a quarter turns. Start the engine (hopefully) and turn the low speed screw (it's the one on the right marked L) anti clock until the motor splutters then turn it clockwise until it runs smooth. Do the same for the high speed screw (H) at high revs.

Just had a thought, it could quite likely be a clogged spark arrestor (wire gauze in the exhaust). That would cause the symptoms you describe. Three screws hold the exhaust which can be removed without taking off any covers.
