Hi

I regularly buy cut flowers and thought that it would be nicer to grow my own. Any suggestions for easy to grow in a smallish space flowers suitable for cutting please.

My dad had asiatic lillies in his garden and he does nothing in teh way of gardening except cut the grass

There are many varieties of cosmos that look good and probably a dahlia for every different taste in flower shape and colour as well.

All the above plus maybe Gallardia, Echinacea,Nigella,all from seed(first 2 perrenial) or those showy Japanese hybrid anenomes,that flower summer and autumn(Blag a root division off someone).Oh,and Dianthus(pinks).

Calla lilies are great as cut flowers, last a long time too, you can get different colours other than white. I would also go for dahlias, easy to grow with lots of flowers to cut.

Sweet williams, seeds are cheep and they last very well.

Think I too will grow flowers to cut and put in vases!

thanks for the replies. I have some seeds from last years sweet peas so they are definately getting planted - I hadn't thought of using them as a cut flower before. Do Dahlias have enough stem? Mine seem quite short - maybe a different variety? Will look up the other suggestions - my botanical knowledge is limited.

Cornflowers are really cheap and easy to grow. You can get mixed colours but for me they have to be blue.

I love growing flowers for cutting. When you cut some stems they throw up some more!

If you have a bit of space, then some pretty foliage plants will help your flower displays. I made a passable Christmas display from some variagated holly and ivy - no flowers needed. Bronze fennel, although quite large, makes lovely foliage and has the added advantage of being edible. I often make a display just from the prunings of herbs. Makes wonderful air freshener.

It's a bit late now for this year, but a lot of bulbs make good cut flowers: daffodils, gladioli etc.

I like hydrangeas as you can use them as cut flowers and then dry them.
