Sounds easy enough but limited funds, no job prospects, any thoughts gratefully received, of course I do have a lottery ticket!!!

Does it have to be Orkney?
I know of a house for rent with adjoining workshop and shop in a well established craft village on the north coast of Scotland which will be up for grabs shortly.

Thanks Maggie, I have a relative on Shapinsay that was all, and love the place. Would like to have a total change from science and try to make a living at something creative...dying,spinning knitting, painting etc. Not sure I can make enough at that
.....Thank you Boboff!

Sorry for hijackign but the thought of mving somewhere remote and more self sufficient keeps returning me so often that I had to read this thread. The cottage and workshope sounds intriguing. Can you be so kind as to give me some more information please?
Elle, x

We have a 2 bedroom house with a huge workshop and shop space, which we started renovating to house a bakery and deli but then my gal found love and moved away. We're finishing off the renovations and will be renting or selling it soon.
Google Balnakeil Craft Village and have a look.

Having made the move to Orkney I'd say there are lots of plus points but also quite a few negative ones. My husband had the luxury of having a job where he could work from home for a company in Preston (near where we used to live) but not having a job and moving here is a whole lot harder as the jobs are few and wages very low. There are lots of crafts people here who seem to make a living out of making woolens, pottery, artwork, etc., but you'd have to be geared-up from the start and hit the ground running. Oh there's so much to learn about and tell you about living here but island living isn't for everybody but you have experience of Orkney already which is more than some people who move up here have, some just move up without seeing the place at all! I hope you make a desicion and a life change just really research things thoroughly and if you want any help just pm me.......although we don't have children so can't help there
