I think something is try to rear its young in some of my seedlings indoors. I decided that one of my sage plants was looking big enough to plant out and found a couple of holes in the soil.

On further inspection these holes had neatly packed leaves inside them, sort of rolled up. Inside the leaves was this hard stuff that resembled polyfiller. I left them out in the sun for something else to eat and the hard stuff turned to a sticky substance. Any ideas? - I wonder if it is moths?

I've absolutely no idea but it sounds very intriguing. Some sort of insect (that is capable of burying leaves like that) surely?

Yesterday I was doing some work on the outside of someone's house. There were several old screw holes in the brick wall, and two of them had been packed with leaves.

I meant to prise one out for a closer inspection, but forgot about it in the end. I'm guessing it's the work of either an insect or a spider. What about masonry bees; is that the sort of thing they'd do?

could be bees muddy - we had a leaf cutting bee that did that into our gate.. was fascinating to watch. We also had some bees that went into holes in the door frame... not sure whether they took anything inside with them but they were always back and forth and then covered the hole with mud which dried to seal up the holes... I blamed my kids at first... but then realised it was the bees... how clever!!!

It's the mason(ry) bees who fill up the holes with mud/soil - they do it in our window drainage holes!
