A large flat of Portulaca, or moss rose, was planted in a bed. Plants grow at ground level and the flowers are of many colours. The appearance in a bed is most pleasing as opposed to planting along a border. They thrive in dry conditions, and will deteriorate if wet for a few days. I once grew them in a four foot diameter circular bed and the effect was stunning, when in full bloom, which they are all Summer. Some years they self seed. Nice to have in any flower garden with no maintenance required.
