On Sunday I am going to view a possible new allotment. I have been on the local list for about 4 years now and I am no where near the top, it could take years. I am extremely excited about the whole thing, but I am also slightly concerned that it may not be the right possibility. The allotment is about 6 miles from my house, so I will not be able to visit everyday more like 3 times a week. So I would be looking at plants that need the least amount of attention, and keeping the other bits at home. The site has no water and I have no hope of erecting a shed to be able to catch water, so all water will have to be carried in the car from home.
Does this all sound like complete madness??

Nah! You'll cope. I live 1/2 a mile from my allotment but only usually manage to get there for a couple of hours twice a week. OK, it's got more weeds than crops, but it's my space and I love it. As for water, I've seen pictures of water butts with a big sheets of corrugated something or other poking out the top at an angle so it catches more rain which trickles into the butt. You'll find a way. And if you don't get on with it, stop! Simple! At least go and have a look. While you're there, take a look at other people's plots too, to see how they cope with the water thing.

Google map it on the satellite setting to try to find local water sources (Streams etc).

Once you have your plot, join the allotment association, you may be able to swap to one nearer home as is possible with council accommodation.
