Plums

I was out on a cycle, that included a towpath. There were a number of trees bearing a small plum about the size of a large cherry. Is it a wild plum or a particular type?

Probably feral plums reverting back to their parentage (cherry plum, Prunus cerasifera, is a possible ancestor of the domestic plum), we found three or four trees on a cycle ride last weekend and picked about a pound.

What colour were they? I have a cherry plum, as mentioned by George, and they start yellow, ripening to deep red. They're delicious.

Most are red, but some trees have yellow ones that are ripe. Having looked it up, they are the cherry plums and are edible without having to be cooked.

Sound like bullace plums. Well, that's what we used call them in Norfolk. Perfectly edible when fully ripe and make very good jam, but they are fiddly to stone

No, they're not bullace - definitely cherry plums.

Ha! We used to have this argument in the Pub about 20 years ago, one would say Damsons, one Sloes, one plums!

no, really, they are cherry plums, mostly, there are also a few Mirabelle plums and the other day I saw what looked like semi-ripe Victorias!
