how do i.....get the paint off our cast iron stove in order to black it with a graphite based polish? Or is the easy answer just to paint it again? Will it ever look nice like that as it doesn't now and it has started to rust. Taking it out and getting it sandblasted is not an option.

Just paint a few coats of blacking over the top.You could sand it with a bit of fine emery to give it a key, then wash thoroughly, but I wouldn't bother. When I've painted wood burners with this stuff they look good, just slap another coat on every year or two when it starts to look scruffy. BWs.

Over here there is a special spray for that. Just mask it up and spray it from the can, it is really super stuf. I am sure you can get in the UK.

You can only get the spray paint in Italy too, but I much prefer blacking polish. Up till now I've only buffed it with olive oil to prevent any rust appearing, but I think I might get some blacking paste sent over.

We have never had a problem with rust, is it outside?

No, but pans bubble over with with water and steam can cause rust.

just resurrected this thread to update on the oil treatment of our stove. Thumbs up! it's looking lovely and shiny with a much nicer patina than from the paint. i regret painting it last year tbh.
