Found this amazing website with loads of practical information, DIY instructions etc., anything from making soap to gunpowder, a hydraulic press, drill a well, hrbal remedies, pottery, water distillation and filtering, just to name a few. The site is still under construction, and many pages don't yet have pictures, but loads do. A tinkerer's heaven.

It is a good site with lots of stuff, my only reservation is that there is stuff there that I have seen on other sites, but there is appears to be no reference to who did the original work.
