Can you give us an idea of scale? How big are the berries? How long are the leaves (the un-nibbled ones!) And how tall is the tree itself?

The fruits look like the service tree, one of the sorbus family, but not sure about the leaves.

Difficult to see the leaves as something has been munching away at them

Will take better pics later that show the trunk and scale of the tree too.

I don't think its a service tree. - they have deeply lobed leaves.
I put my money on a bird cherry (prunus padus). Alternate, linear leaves with berries looking very much like the picture. Do the leaves have very fine toothng around the edge? Is the bark dark drown and peels easily?

I did think of a gean - wild cherry, but the leaves aren't serrated. Possibly some sort of wild apple/crab apple, tiny?

Upon closer inspection they are slightly serrated... and in all other aspects it does indeed look like a bird cherry - the fruit is a thin layer over a central stone - the only difference is that the trunk isn't dark brown and peeling... but a lighter greyish brown (with lots of lichen!)

I've got a wild cherry next to this tree... although it doesn't have any cherries on it!!
