there are masses of these around at the moment, and I feel I ought to be using them.

Any recipes/ideas for what I can make with them, other than haw jelly?

TIA,

Hazel

You could make some hedgerow jam, it won't use many but that's the best I can come up with at the moment.

450 g crab apples
450 g blackberries
450 g elderberries
225 g sloes
225 g haws (hawthorn berries)
100 g hazelnuts
1.5 lt water
1.75 kg sugar

WASH THE FRUIT! Peel, chop and core the crab apples. Hull and pick over the blackberries. Remove the elderberries from the stalks - use the prongs of a fork for this. Prick the sloes serveral times with a needle and remove the tops and tails of the haws. Chop the nuts. Put the prepared fruit and nuts into a pan with the water and cook until soft. While cooking watch for sloe stones and remove as you go. Add the sugar, stirring well until dissolved. Bring to boil and boil hard until set obtained. Pot and seal. Cherry plums and wild cherry could be added instead of sloes.

I have seen a few variations on this theme and am having a go at something along these lines, I'm gonna leave the nuts out though :flower:

Thanks,

I made a version of hedgerow jam last year that was v nice (blackberries, plums, elderberries, crabapples) and didn't think of putting haws in it...

I left the nuts out too.

Thanks again

I made hedgerow jam last year, but I think I burnt it cos it sucked!

my sloe gin and fruity vodka are still going strong though. for the vodka, strong isn't the word... engine degreaser would be a better description!
