Small ( 2-4 cm across) round brown ( very slight reddish coppery tinge, no stem. Smooth round buttons.Growing amongst Oak and hawthorn trees on the ground on mossy hillocks. Very firm and dry.
Cut one in half and the flesh is a solid very dark brown ( virtually black) right through except the outer skin which is light brown. It smells heavenly.
I have searched for hours and not found anything like it on any mushroom site.
Any ideas?
I'd post a pic but camera is out of batteries. I've never seen anything like it before though.

Someone on Downsizer put me on the right track. It's not edible despite looking and smelling good. So if anyone else finds one of these leave em be.
Mine is the one on the left.
