Progress - of sorts

Now that the allotment society has erected our shed we're working in earnest. First job is to clear an area for the greenhouse. But everytime I stick in the fork it hits an obstacle. This weekend I've dug out stones varying in size from large pebbles to rocks, lots of broken glass, a complete beer bottle (survived the rotavating & my digging), lots of bits of carrier bags & a veritable ironmongers: an iron bar, a couple of rods & some kind of frame - sort of like a small bed head.

Looking back at the plot all I seem to have achieved is weeding one very small area. :?

Oh well, onwards & upwards...

Its bloody hard work and when you stand back and see you've dug a piece of ground a foot square but your body tells you that you've done at least half an acre it is a bit demorolising,(spelt incorrectly I know) but all we have to keep us going is the thought of next years harvest ! Keep at it you will get there :flower:

I didn't mention the plus side of Sunday's digging: I also dug up a few tates. Not many, but they made a lovely potato salad to go with my tea that night. First produce of our lottie

I haven't actually done any work since then. It's clay soil & after the weather we've had it'll be like concrete. I'm waiting for a bit of rain, then I'll get in there after that.

It can be quite strange the things you find in the undergrowth:
positives - a metal bench, a fork, a hoe, and old coal bunker(which is coming for a coat of paint a new floor and will be ready for coal for winter
odd things - a microwave  why ??
negatives - the longest bramble roots in the history of the world - maybe not but they feel like it !

Hee hee, a microwave? I've just read your blog - you've come a long way! Well done. That bench looks good too - what a nice find.

Sounds about par for the course. When we dug ours we brought up all kinds of things including huge boulders that took 2 of us to carry away, a chimney pot, and loads of sheets of glass stacked on top of one another - until I put my spade in and then they were loads of shards of glass desely packed together :-(

I would have sworn the site had been untouched in 50 years, but recently I was talking to the guy who had it last - 2 years ago, and he swore it was thoroughly double-dug at that point.

That sounds like our garden Ranter!! I keep hoping to unearth something really old and interesting... but no... so far just HUGE boulders and stones and bits of old barbed wire and building material. Still... onward and upward...

CP - sheets of glass - egads!! Lucky you weren't hurt.

I bet your tattie salad was the tastiest ever given the amount of hard work that you'd done.

Erm, if you're digging, you should really be going downward, Shirlz.

Ooh, it always surprises me when someone is actually paying attention!

It was a good tattie salad. The garlic mayo with home-produced eggs helped.

My tattie salad was made with shop-bought mayo I'm afraid, but with home-grown mint. You're right Shirlz, it was without doubt the best I've had.

It's a glorious day here, if a tad windy, so I'm hoping to head up to the lottie later this afternoon. I'm waiting for a phone call from my doc at the mo & can feel a doze coming on. :sleepy2:
