back boilers

I have an open fire that has a disused back boiler. My problem is the back boiler now has a huge hole in it and whilst the wall behind is not getting hot it does not make for a very good fire.

SO

What can I use to fill it without it being to difficult for a novice with very little strength?

It's too big a hole for fire cement on it's own. Is there anything that is like the foam gap filler that is made for fire backs?

I don't have much expereince in this area mate, but would it be possible to make up a stiff paste of fireproof cement and then put up some chicken wire or some such and use it a as support to spread the cement over?
