Not sure where to post this - Microwaves - OMG!!!

Post: # 47210Post madanna »

Ok I may be nieve - I always knew they werent exactly great (more on the enviro impact side) - I do have a microwave but it mostly sits on the side and I dont use it - but I didnt really get the danger till i read this - I have to say I was shocked - Thought u might want to see

Holistic health news – Must you microwave?

Thank you Lily Cartier, who sent us news of a school science project - going round the Web - that looked at what happens when you give plants microwaved water.

(PIC of very dead flower watered with mircowaved water and one very alive with tap water)

"I have known for years that the problem with microwaved anything is not the radiation people used to worry about, it's how it corrupts the DNA in the food so the body can not recognize it," said one commentator. "The body wraps it in fat cells to protect itself from the dead food or it eliminates it fast.

"Think of all the Mothers heating up milk in these 'safe' appliances," she adds. "What about the nurse in Canada that warmed up blood for a transfusion patient and accidentally killed them when the blood went in dead. Proof is in the pictures of living plants dying. Remember You are also Living. Take Care."

Slightly mad but I like me that way - Anyway didnt someone once say that theres a fine line between madness and genius?

I just had a look at that, then googled to see if anything else had been written. It seems to be an urban legend. http://www.snopes.com/science/microwave/plants.asp

Cool! Well done Tay!

It sounded like bulldust to me, and I was going to give it a go myself, but you have saved me the trouble.

When I was working for CSR (as Group OHS Manager) I got a "please circulate" email about coughing deeply if you are having a heart attatck to keep the heart going. Sounded like bull, so I contacted the Aus Heart Foundation - It was bull!

You can't be too careful these days.

I thought this was going to be about the health expert who has just recommended we all microwave our dishcloths for a few minutes to kill the germs. Except that the fire brigade have said that's a terrible idea because we would all be burned to death.

Am I the only person who uses the microwave to dry me socks in?

Careful with the sock drying, if they are hemmed with synthetic thread then it can melt and fill your socks with prickly sharp bits. I had that experience with another item of clothing which got thrown out a soon as I sat down in them

ahhhh the ecstasy of hot socks!
In this weather, I tend to throw my clothes over the Rayburn to warm up before wearing - I've learnt from bitter experience to let jeans cool down for a minute or two afterwards - otherwise the metal studs can be agonisingly hot! :?

I skim read the rest of posts and thought that you had metal studded pants

I thought that microwaves are very safe and more energy efficient for some things Jacket spud being the obvious winner. Aparently, they were used in the catering industry for years before they hit the mass market.

I do baked spuds in there and scrambled egg - no burnt pan to deal with either. I do prefer the proper jacket spuds done in the oven though, that lovely crunchy skin with the fluffy centre... It tastes better too... but obviously I wouldn't just put the oven on for one baked tattie.

I agree with you Shirley - jackets are best done in oven - but - you can do them alongside other things , bung them in the fridge when done- then use the micro to warm them up again the next day - works great.
we warm up milk for hot choc etc in the microwave - quick, and does not dirty a pan. wonder if its more efficient? - I'll have to work that one out...

I have read that they destroy the water soluble vitamins in veggies, but not sure if this has been corroborated............

Boss woman here does a little trick of nuking them in microwave first to get most of the cooking out of the way, then bung them in the oven to finish cooking and crisp the skins. Seems to work pretty well and saves the expense of running the oven for all that time

I seem to be using my microwave more than those who have posted. I use my Rayburn to cook several meals at once then to save on oil as the oven guzzles the stuff I freeze the meals into portions. I then defrost when I want them and heat them in the microwave...my own home made microwave meals. The result is the Rayburn oven is fired up around twice a week, maybe 3 times if I decided to do a fresh roast meal.

shirley, how do you do scrambled eggs in the micro? every time I do it takes days of soaking and scrubbing to get the egg off of the mug that I use to cook them

The blood thing - proteins denature at around 40 deg C (the chains shrink and go really curly and tight - you know like egg whites when you boil them!!) so of course the blood would be dead - stupid nurse!!!
As to the plant thing - its the same as using boiled water from your kettle - the minerals become reactive at high temps and bond together and make strange componds - a simple thermal reaction.
Anyway - the best way I've found to clean your microwave is to place half a lemon into a bowl of water and heat it - the lemon juice cuts thru the grease and the steam softens the other ikky stuff.
I also discovered that the best way to alleviate things like ear ache and tooth ache is to heat a sock containing cloves, cinamon and nutmeg into the microwave along with a cup of water and heat for about 30 secs and apply to the sore bit!! Great for almost immediate pain relief in fractious children!!!
All in all - used properly microwaves are a great energy saving device and super for a quick tea!!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind

It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
