Very cute! Good idea with the marbles in the water, too, I wouldn't have thought of that.

Are the chicks purebred? What sort are they?

Congratulations !

they are cute ... and fair play as they are from a home made incubator ..

what breed are they ?

I had 10 chicks last monday ... and gave a clutch of 6 eggs to a new broody yesterday ... so the countdown is launched !

No 3 was all fluffy and warm when we got up this morning, so I'm well chuffed! the chicks are Lakenvelder bantams, tidy little birds ideal for a small garden. They have white bodies and legs, with black heads, neck and tail with a serrated comb. I'm hoping to sell these guys once the auctions start again if they turn out to be all pullets I'm looking at around £45, but what are the chances of that! I keep having to tell myself I can't keep them, they are for selling......

How are they doing now ?

They should start eating by now ..

And indeed, I'm dreading the moment when I'll have to dispatch or sell these cuties:

Last batch from 9 days ago (picture at days old):

All three are now feeding well and hopping around like mad- The boys are loving watching their antics, and although I'm trying not to name them they have the collective nickname of the three stooges as they are the clumsiest creatures I've seen!

One of them has 'spectacles' each side of their eyes, does anyone know if this is sex linked in Lakenvelders?

I'll go with the rest, Deb...............really cute!

We have used a brooder for growing on day-olds, but haven't hatched our own. I must try that one day!

They are all gorgeous. I especially love Camile's photo of hen with a chick peeking out of its backside!

Are the marbles to stop them falling in or drowning in the water?

The marbles have 2 uses normally:

Drowning being the first one if you don't have a drinker shallow enough ... and if they are reared in an incubator, the marbles shines in the light so attracts the chicks to the water.

As for the Lakenvelder chicks, I have no clue at all, but they are really cute. I love chicks !

They don't mention autosexing there:

I can't wait for in 2 1/2 weeks to have the 3rd batch !

MMM, one of the neighbors got that picture framed !
