Hi everyone :O)

I have an old cracked toilet bowl that I'd like to do something with and I'm looking for ideas. I thought, perhaps, in the garden ... and no, it won't work as an outside loo!! ;O)

Now remember, I'm a thick 'towny'. So full, clear, step by step instructions in lay language would be appreciated. I don't mind if ends up looking like a loo or not. Just need the ideas and directions. Hope you can help. I want to be flushed with success on this one! :O)

fill it with soil and plant it out with summer plants

Well the obvious is to plant something in it , I'd go for something flowery and tumbling like geraniums I think.

It's always going to look like a loo, but isn't that the point?

You could plant some Bushman's Toilet Paper

Not sure that it will grow here though but it was worth a mention.

Fill it with soil or compost and grow potatoes in it


Then you can say you got mash from the U bend

I have seen someone plant a tree in a toilet but I would not recommend it as the roots would surely break the toilet.

Although some flowers, herbs or even a courgette plant would all work ok.

Just to show you how something growing in it would look.

I did have an idea once to have a whole bathroom suite full of soil growing things in my back yard, I decided against this in the end as I wondered what to do with the spent compost the year after growing, a bath full of soil is a lot of soil to find a place for especially when you have no car to move it.

With this in mind perhaps a rosemary plant or something perennial might work the best.

Talk about toilet humour!! ;O)

I am 'made up' with the ideas you have given me. The geraniums sound good and the tree idea sounded really good ... turning a lavatory into a 'lavatree'. Sorry, I'm simple mind! :O)

Would it be possible to plant something, not too demanding, around the edges of the rosemary that could tumble over the side? If so, what? Preferably a herb that could be used in the kitchen.

I know these things seem obvious to most of you, but I really am a green, wet behind the ears, newbie! ;O)

Rosemary can get quite big - but you could always start off with some thyme or oregano around the edges.

Golden oregano (sometimes called Marjoram) would look nice. What colour is the loo? Wouldn't want it to clash!

You could plant it up with just herbs, say parsley, chives, some different coloured thymes, and a rosemary with the marjoram/oregano to tumble over and soften the edges.

You will need to put some old crocks or stones in the bottom of the cistern for drainage, although the loo bottom will probably not need it as there'll be a big hole.

Hmm I am picturing it now myself, looking very pretty.

Alternatively you could make a scarecrow and place him strategically on the loo, in the middle of your veg patch!

What about adding some dwarf french bean plants around the edge of the pan. They would tumble over quite prettily plus give you food into the bargain.

Alternatively, in the cistern, a few dwarf sweet peas for colour, scent and cut flowers for the house.

I can just hear somebody shouting out to the garden - oy, can you go to the loo and pick some parsley for the soup!

How much thyme on that loo? Reminds me of my mother when I was a kid. I was only reading my comics and books!

I like oregano. Don't know much about it though. Which would be the nicest in omelettes and sprinkled over pizza and salads? If I planted a rosemary and some oregano, would I just use standard soil?

Milly, the men in the white coats have already got me! They'll let me type or use a crayon, but nothing sharp like a pencil!

I don't need a scarecrow, I use my grandsons for that! I have a soft spot for my grandsons .... a bog at the end of the garden!
