Office plants

Post: # 80531Post the.fee.fairy »

Quick question (i'm at work and typing quickly before anyone notices...)

What plants are best for an office?
We've got windows along one side, and flourescent lighting on the rest

What plants can survive this? i've got a little mint plant on the windowsill, and a Fittonia (i kept the label in, i'm not that horticultural!!) on my desk. The mint was looking a bit dead on my desk,. so i moved it to the window where its now growing nicely - i think it needed more light.

So, recommendations please!

spider plants - to soak up toxins in the air, especially formaldahyde

Wandering sailor - nice and green, thrives on shade and sporadic watering (the only plants that I have NEVER killed)... easy to take cuttings too, I'll send you some if you like.

If it's a warm office then dragon plants do well, buy the fruit from the supermarket and save some of the seeds.

Aspeedistra (read it phoneticly, I can't spell, any corrections would be welcome). There's a reason the Victorians called them 'Cast Iron Plants'. They'll grow anywhere.

I'd welcome any plants in our office - in the new building we're not allowed any  Glad I'm only there for 3hrs a day.

Given all the toxins given off by modern office equipment, I'd go for spider plants given a choice. In a book I got from the library, called The Organic Life, I think - it had a forward by Hugh FW anyway - there was a page listing which plants were best for which areas (in terms of which toxins they soak up). I remember spider plants were the best all rounders.

there is a very good book

which says which plants are good to grow, I used to have a copy, but my my mother borrowed it and never returned it.

That's ok. I've been put in charge of getting plants - i don't think they quite realised what they've let themselves in for...

I'm currently rooting some jade plants (i've had 2 big ones outside since the summer - they're the only plants i've never killed..), some spiderplants and some mint plants.

heehee...wonder how much i could get out of the office budget...
