I have an old duvet that has now reached the end of its useful life. Before I consign it to the bin I was thinking about re-use and a thought that occurred was that perhaps the birds might want the stuffing for nests.
The thing is that’s its synthetic, polyester I guess. Does this pose a risk to the birds if I put a couple of handfuls out? I was a little concerned about them ingesting it or something.

You could try freecycling it instead. Dog owners often ask for old duvets, pillows and cushions for bedding.

I thought of that but I'd be embarrassed to give this one away. Its prob ten years old and is covered in stains.
Its spent the last 5 years as a make shift mattress topper.

You could always give it a quick cheap dye job . . .

Dog rescue centres would be vary happy to use it - and it would soon be totally stained out of recognition

If it's just dirty, you can clean them in laundrettes, they have humungous machines that will take a double, winter, king size quilts. If it's very unsightly, I'd wash it and use it as the felt for a home made patchwork quilt, ie. sandwidch it between a pretty top and a plain back cloth. If it's too lumpy to use as a quilt felt I'd wash it and tease the fibres apart and use them as the filling for new cusions or draught excluders.

Having teased apart the fibers from one quilt I'm not sure I'd give it to the birds as I'd be worried about them choking.
