Hi everyone,

Now morning sickness is getting better my thoughts have turned to this years growing.
We are wanting to grow more this year but our garden is a bit rubbish, so am wanting to do raised beds.
I read a mention of using those big blue bags for life from IKEA as a cheap raised bed system, I reckon they'd do well on a square foot gardening type plan.
What do you think ?? Have the hormones finally sent me round the bend !!

I have seen/ heard of people growing stuff in all sorts of containers...so why not?

I wouldn't use the full height of them though, maybe half size... I just can't see them holding that wait of wet soil... but that gives you problems with what you can grow... hmm...

We had some dolomite delivered in a 1 tonne bag to dry up a muddy gate entrance and we used the bag for composting in then planted marrows in the compost it worked a treat, it did rot away eventually but it served a purpose and kept it out of landfill, so i can't see any reason why you should'nt use the bags, great idea  go for it.
all the best

I think it would work, especially if not filled right to the top. You could always shore it up with some external support and gradually improve the supporting mechanism as the bag decays.

You might need to put holes in the bottom of it for drainage - I don't know how permeable those bags are.
